Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance do I need to book you for my wedding or event lettering?

During peak wedding season (usually April — November), I recommend booking me at least 1-2 months in advance. I give calendar priority to clients who are working with me for multiple aspects of their celebration (spot calligraphy, envelopes, and day-of calligraphy). That said, I always do my best to accommodate tight timelines if I can!

How do I save a spot on your calendar?

First things first — shoot me an inquiry. Once we’ve ironed out the major details around your timeline, style preferences, and color palette, I will send you a contract and an invoice for 50% of your estimated project cost. That’s it — you’re booked! Once your project date gets closer, I will coordinate with you or your planner and stationer to receive any materials and your list. Before diving in I will always send a photo proof of your piece for your approval on color and layout, too.

Is everything you create done by hand?

At the start, yes. Every piece of script I write is done by hand, either on a surface with ink or on my iPad digitally. Certain projects make more sense as digital reproductions (like putting your names on your invitation — we’ll do a digital file and then your stationer will print it) while others, like place cards, have to be done by hand. Regardless, whatever we make together will be 1000% one-of-a-kind, which is pretty rock ‘n roll if you ask me.

What format do you need my names, addresses, or other information in?

I don’t have any hard and fast requirements for lists, but have generally found Excel and editable Word files (not PDFs) work best. My only ask is that you spell out everything exactly as you want it written — whether that be names and formal titles, states, or words like “Road” and “Boulevard.” I will never assume titles or genders for your guests, so however you write them is how I will write them, too.

What happens if I have guest additions or realize there’s a mistake on my list?

I typically hold onto 4-5 extra envelopes or materials for place cards after I ship your pieces just in case of mail malfunctions, list add-ons, or “oops, we typed Freddy instead of Jason!” moments. Things happen! I do ask that if you have additions that you submit them in one batch if possible.

Do you do on-site work, large installations or in-person events?

Yes! If it is most convenient for you or your client, I am happy to work on-site during event set-up. Event installations and in-person calligraphy (like lettering gift tags or doing personalizations at your brand’s event) are also my absolute favorite projects. Pricing and availability for these projects depends on the time of year and travel — for more information, feel free to email me directly at hello@jessica-mcsweeney.com.
